The City’s efforts to obtain a grant through Community Builders has been in the works for some time, long before we even knew about Salida Crossings. We understood that our land constraints would focus redevelopment on the Hwy 50 corridor.
Community Builders is a non-profit specializing in community dialogue to envision and plan for specific purposes. Their expertise lies in a public engagement process, land use, transportation, and balancing long-term vision with attainable goals.
This project will focus on a vision and action plan for Hwy 50 from Oak Street to Walmart. It will provide a framework to guide and inform technical recommendations. The goal is a corridor that is safe, walkable, economically vibrant, and more in line with the values and vision of the Salida community. Housing will be a primary consideration.
The process will include direct work with citizens, local businesses, and stakeholders to create a vision for the corridor. A Community Advisory Committee, focus groups, questionnaires, neighborhood meetings, learning workshops and online engagement opportunities will all be considered as ways to engage as many citizens as possible. In fact, if you are interested you can leave your name with Lynda Travis at the Town Hall.
Hopefully, the project will get started as we move into the summer, most likely beginning with strategies to gain data on citizen priorities and ending with a Development Report. Watch for information on this. We are very pleased to see this move forward and glad to be working with Community Builders. It was a competitive process to receive the grant and we are hopeful we will learn a lot through this endeavor.
